Syphilis Stages

According to the United States Center for Disease Control, syphilis is often called “the great imitator” because the symptoms are so often mistaken for symptoms of other less dangerous diseases. The CDC recorded over 36,000 cases of the disease in 2006, including nearly 10,000 cases of primary and secondary syphilis. It is most common in women ages 20 to 24 and in men ages 35 to 39. You can contract the disease through direct contact with a syphilis sore during anal, vaginal, oral or rectal sex.

Syphilis Signs

Syphilis is a serious infection or STD transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact. It is caused by a bacterium and you can acquire this by being in contact with the sores or blood of an infected individual, especially the sores found on the person's genitals, mouth, and anus.

The first stage of syphilis is called primary syphilis and usually occurs 10 days to 3 months after exposure. In men, the first sign of syphilis may be a sore on the penis. In women, the first sign may be a sore around or inside the vagina. The sores might not even be that noticeable since these syphilis sores are not usually painful. The sores will disappear after about 3 to 6 weeks. Your lymph nodes in your groin may also be enlarged.
